Here are Michael Hall School, we have the exciting opportunity to build an in-house lunchtime provision for the students and staff. We are looking for a Chef Manager who is adaptable and innovative, to support the ethos of the school through a nutritionally balanced, economically friendly, wholesome menu. As well as being responsible for the food hygiene and health & safety of the kitchen, and managing the kitchen staff; the Chef Manager will work closely with the Head of Operations to develop the provision at the school and ensure it is interlinked with the Education and the Market Garden. This is a fantastic prospect for growth and progression for the right candidate with a passion for nourishment and learning.

The details of this role are as follows:

Working hours: 8:30-3:30 Monday-Friday (35 hours)

Contract Type: Term time only +1 week & 5.6 weeks annual leave (pro rata)

Salary: FTE £27,861-32,898 pro rata dependant on experience

Start date: Intermittently as soon as possible, fully from September

Probationary period: 6 months

Job Description

Main purpose

To provide a quality catering service which supports the wellbeing of pupils and staff in line with the school’s ethos. This includes meeting school catering and health and safety standards.

Duties and responsibilities

Meal planning and provision

- Plan varied and nutritious menus in advance

- Creating organic/free-range, seasonal and wholesome meals with fresh local ingredients

- Oversee the provision of good quality school meals in line with government guidelines and legislation on school nutrition standards

- Promoting healthy eating, cultural diversity and encouraging pupils to try new foods

- Negotiate best-value contracts with authorised suppliers to ensure the cost effectiveness of the catering service

- Manage food stocks to prevent shortages or excess supply and adhere to the catering budget

- Cater to special dietary requirements and ensure that allergy information is effectively communicated and labelled

- Ensure the provision is in line with the school’s ethos

- Change the menus to reflect current food trends

- Responsible for the monitoring of production and wastage

- Support the development of the vision for the food provision at Michael Hall School in line with the School Improvement Plan and Site Development Plan

Staff management

- Supervise and deploy catering staff to ensure efficiency and high-quality food provision

- Prepare and manage the duty rota, delegate tasks appropriately to staff, and ensure the smooth running of the team

- Carry out performance management duties and make sure all staff in the team have relevant, required training

- Promote morale and wellbeing among the catering staff

- Undergo staff appraisals in line with the school’s appraisal policy

- Promote a friendly working relationship with colleagues

- Promote a good company image to customers and guests and use positive customer service practices

- Assist in the recruitment and selection of catering staff

- Carry out induction and training for new staff members

Health and safety

- Ensure compliance with school catering standards legislation

- Ensure that HACCP procedures, legal and company regulations regarding hygiene, food, health, and safety are complied with

- Ensure that EHO expectations are met, and be the direct contact with the EHO for registration and upkeep of SFBB

- Support to create and maintain the school’s food safety policy, health and safety policy, and allergens policy

- Ensure that the kitchen and dining area are kept clean and hygienic at all times

- Ensure that kitchen equipment is used safely and according to operating manuals

- Ensure that kitchen and catering equipment is maintained according to the maintenance schedule

- Arrange for all necessary repairs to be carried out to ensure the safe running of kitchen equipment and remove any faulty equipment pending repairs.

- Ensure that catering staff are adhering to proper hygiene procedures, including wearing the correct uniform

- Record all accidents and incidents

- Maintain and implement the cleaning schedules to necessary standards

- To report any incident of accident, fire, theft, loss, damage, and act as may be appropriate or possible

Other areas of responsibility

Safeguarding

- Work in line with statutory safeguarding guidance (including Keeping Children Safe in Education, Prevent) and the school’s safeguarding and child protection policies

- Promote the safeguarding of all pupils in the school

Other

- To undertake occasional duties outside the normal routine but within the scope of the position and the department’s activities

- Option to assist, at special functions such as lettings, some of which may occur outside normal working hours, for which you will be paid overtime

- To report any complaint or compliment and act if possible

- To attend meetings and courses, as require

- Working alongside the Estates Manager and the Site Team; and the School’s Market Gardener, reporting to the Head of Operations
