About Us

York Steiner School is a thriving independent school for children aged 3–16, offering an inspiring Steiner-Waldorf education. We are looking for a skilled and collaborative Finance Manager to join our team and help steward the school’s finances.

The Role

You will lead the finance function, reporting to the Business Manager, and work closely with the Headteacher and Trustees. You’ll ensure sound financial planning, compliance, and sustainability, aligning decisions with the school’s educational priorities and ethos.

What We’re Looking For

AAT Level 3 or equivalent financial qualification.

Significant experience in financial management, budgeting, and forecasting.

Experience with accounting systems and reporting (QuickBooks, Xero, DEXT).

Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.

Collaborative communicator who respects Steiner-Waldorf pedagogy and school culture.

Job Description

Lead and manage the school’s finance function to ensure sound financial planning, compliance, and sustainability. Report to the Business Manager and work collaboratively with Trustees, the Headteacher, and the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to ensure that financial management actively supports teaching and learning, reflects the ethos of York Steiner School, and contributes to strategic development.

Finance/Accounts Assistant(s)

Budgeting & Financial Planning

Prepare and manage the school’s budget and financial strategy in collaboration with the Business Manager and Trustees.

Align budgeting decisions with educational priorities and long-term school strategy.

Provide clear, timely financial advice to support decision-making at SLT and Board level.

Management Accounts & Reporting

Produce monthly and termly management accounts, cash flow forecasts, and financial reports for the Business Manager, Headteacher, and Trustees.

Provide commentary and analysis to support strategic decisions.

Financial Operations

Oversee payroll, pensions, and statutory deductions in liaison with payroll providers.

Manage invoicing, fee structures, bursary assessments, and debt recovery sensitively and in line with school values.

Ensure compliance with tax, charity, and company law.

Liaise with auditors and accountants to ensure statutory reporting and compliance.

Systems & Processes

Maintain financial systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, DEXT) and ensure accurate record-keeping.

Support the Business Manager in maintaining robust internal controls and risk management.

Continuously improve financial procedures, ensuring they are education-friendly and minimise disruption.

Collaboration & Culture

Work closely with the Business Manager, Headteacher, and SLT to ensure financial decisions reflect the ethos of Steiner-Waldorf education.

Communicate financial information in a clear and accessible way for teaching staff, Trustees, and parents.

Model respect for teachers and the pedagogical priorities of the school.

Essential Qualifications/Experience

AAT Level 3 or equivalent financial qualification.

Significant experience in financial management, budgeting, and forecasting.

Experience with accounting systems and financial reporting (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, DEXT).

Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, Steiner-Waldorf education and ethos.

Ability to work collaboratively, not in isolation, and to support teaching and learning priorities.
